Roosevelt inspired the nation by declaring in an address to Congress that we must protect our four basic freedoms..Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear. Patriotic men and women across the nation responded to the call to contribute their time and talent. Norman Rockwell was one such patriot. He was inspired to interpret the freedoms for war bond posters. Sketches in hand, he traveled to Washington, D.C. to offer his services. Surprisingly, several government offices politely refused his offer to help. In fact, the Office of War Information told him, "We used illustrators in the last war. This war, we're using real artists". Discouraged, Rockwell headed home, but decided to stop firt at the offices of The Saturday Evening Post in Philadelphia. Editor Ben Hibbs understood the artist's vision and immediately offered to publish the paintings in the POST. The response was incredible. The illustrations appeared on the inside of the magazine in four consecutive issues accompanied by eloquent text written by well-known authors of the day. The original illustrations then served as the core of a traveling exhibit, "The Four-Freedoms War Bond Show," that helped sell nearly $133,000,000 worth of war bonds. Additionally, the Office of War Information printed 4,000,000 sets of the illustrations for distribution to foreign countries and schools and institutions in the United States.
