Description:
NR-2004. 4-1/4" Plate with 23K Gold Etched Border, The Saturday Evening Post Cover Series March 19, 1949. Portrayed in this 1949 cover is a teenager about to make the transition from bobbysox to belle of the ball. Soon the flannel shirt, dungarees, socks, and loafers will give way to a gown and evening shoes, and our young lady will be on her way to a magic evening she will never forget. Though Norman Rockwell normally worked in Arlington, Vermont, this was the winter he chose to go to sunny southern California, where he rented a studio in the Los Angeles County Art Institute. Being a sticker for working in natural light, Rockwell was frustrated at the poor light in his rented studio. He had to keep carrying his painting into the men's washroom, where the visibility was somewhat better, in order to get a rough idea of how he was coming along.
