It demonstrates his mastery of the figure under emotional stress at the same time it is under physical stress. The running figure has no time for the exaggerated pantomine of some of the earlier covers. The viewer is less moved by the story than by the actors, though they conform to the narrative demands made on them by the sign. Some feel that the picture could really do without the dog, although his dark form gives weight to the baseline and helps create the sense of motion.
